What's in the Physio Bag, Out Bush? Bringing Therapy to Remote Communities

Some of the children and families we work with live hundreds of kilometres from the nearest clinic. So we go to them! It’s right there in our name - outreach - and it’s the heart of what we do.

But what does mobile physiotherapy actually look like when the “clinic” is a community hall, a shady verandah, or a patch of red dirt under a big blue sky? Let’s take a peek inside the physio bag.

Why do we take physio out bush?

Access to allied health can be hard to come by in remote parts of the Northern Territory. For a family, travelling to a city clinic can mean a long, expensive trip and time away from home, school, and community. When those barriers stack up, it’s often the therapy that misses out.

Our answer is a simple one: bring the clinic to the community. By travelling to where children live, learn, and play, we help make physiotherapy something that fits around family life rather than something families have to chase.

So, what’s actually in the bag?

People are often surprised at how much a good physio session doesn’t need. Out bush, the everyday world becomes the gym. That said, a well-packed bag makes all the difference:

  • Play-based therapy gear - bikes, balls, resistance bands and baby toys. For kids, play is the work.

  • Measuring tools - so we can track progress objectively over time.

  • The tech - a laptop and phone for notes, goals and telehealth check-ins.

  • Out-bush essentials - a hat, a drink bottle, a spare work shirt… and spare undies, because “she’ll be right” is not a packing strategy!

What matters more than the equipment?

The ability to listen and build rapport is half the work - and honestly, all of the fun. A child who feels safe and comfortable will show you far more than any assessment tool can. Good physiotherapy out bush is built on relationships.

Where do we currently visit in the Northern Territory?

Our team travels to a growing number of communities across the Territory. Communities we currently visit are listed above. This list grows and changes over time, so if your community isn’t listed, it’s always worth getting in touch to ask.
