How remote physiotherapy works. Outreach Physiotherapy has been visiting remote Northern Territory communities since 2021. Our physiotherapists travel by 4WD and light aircraft to see children and adults in their own community: at the clinic, at school, at home or wherever therapy is going to work best. We bring the equipment with us, including portable assessment tools, therapy and play equipment, and mobility aids for trial. Between visits we stay in touch by phone and telehealth, and we leave simple programs that families, teachers and local health workers can carry on with.
We work alongside Aboriginal health practitioners, remote area nurses, schools and families, and we take cultural safety seriously: we ask first, work at the community’s pace and use interpreters where needed. In community we see children with developmental delay, cerebral palsy, autism and other disabilities, adults living with disability or recovering from stroke or injury, and NDIS participants needing assessments, progress reports and assistive technology such as wheelchairs, walkers, seating and orthotics. Most remote clients are NDIS participants and remote loadings apply; we can help support coordinators and families understand what a plan covers.
